HUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE

A DOCUMENTARY BY RICK KELLY

ABOUT

Humble in the Jungle tells the story of how Mike “Mike Gee” Smalls, a rapper and plumber who went from humble beginnings to become a Hip Hop star at a young age. When his music career began to wane, Smalls and his family moved south to North Carolina. Once there, he learned the plumbing trade. As an unassuming licensed plumber, he built relationships with other local tradesmen, one of whom was Ricky Kelly, another seasoned plumber.

Like Smalls, Kelly’s road to becoming a tradesman and running his own business was unconventional. Kelly was not just a plumber, but also an artist, albeit his creative outlet and passion was filmmaking. Kelly and Smalls became instant friends. “Humble in The Jungle,” weaves together these threads to illuminate the complex tapestry of Small’s and Kelly’s lives, as well as that of their community and other tradesmen from around the world.

In addition to filming music events, the film follows Smalls and Kelly in their daily lives as family members, community members, artists, and plumbers. The film, moreover, deals with issues of race and class and gives close attention to both men’s experiences as hardworking, working-class tradesmen, family men, and artists. It argues that these plumbers’ stories offer an important lens into the histories and current day struggles of tradesmen of color, as well as the role that community, vocational work, and art play in fostering community and a mindset committed to growth, service, and sacrifice.

Humble In The Jungle focuses on Mike G's efforts to balance his artistry as a rap musician with his desire to provide for his family by practicing a trade. Understanding the value of this work, he also teaches plumbing to share his knowledge with the next generation. Through Mike G's story, the film will work to inspire young men and women to explore the trades as a viable and rewarding career path.

At this moment in time, the need for trade people is at crisis levels. We are in the final stages of finishing a film that points towards a solution. We believe that the film can bring together numerous stakeholders, helping them light a fire of action on this issue.

The government has been sounding an alarm about this need. Industry realizes that we need workers and is anxious to work with government, trade schools, and business to help facilitate this process. We believe that Humble In The Jungle can be a powerful tool in driving awareness about this need.

WHY NOW?

Nearly a decade ago we had a vision for a film that would celebrate a humble and generous artist. At the same time, we also saw that there was a need to shift the narrative about the importance and value of trade work. As we worked on the film we began to see what a powerful spokesperson Mike G could be to help set our youth on a more productive path.
